Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and Blue Rocks

We got up EARLY this morning to hit the road at 5:45 aiming to take the coastal route to Peggy's Cove and arrive at 6:30 for Bill to photograph sunrise.  It was VERY foggy, but we made it as scheduled.  It was amazing to watch the fog roll in, then out, then in again as we were there.  He of course got some great shots, but I got a few OK shots myself (though much of the time I was sitting in the car swatting at a mosquito that got in!)

As I was sitting in the car this vehicle pulled up to unload some stuff at the on site restaurant/store.  I was fascinated as it appeared to be a cut up van strapped to the back of a truck!

Since the restaurant didn't open till 8:30 and we had some time to waste, we headed just 2 km down the road (see how easily I slipped into metric there??) to the Swissair Flight 111 Memorial.  The people of Peggy's Cove and surrounding communities were integral in the recovery of bodies after the crash, and this memorial honors them and the victims.  It was simple and moving.

Then back for a much appreciated and yummy breakfast before heading down the road.  We drove along the coast, in and out of fog.  One minute so foggy you couldn't see the water next to you, the next we had sunglasses on.

We were SO glad we decided to go to Peggy's Cove at sunrise.  It was quiet and peaceful.  By the time we left after breakfast there were multiple tour buses and many many tourists there which really ruined the feel for us.  One of the workers there told me they had 96 tour buses the day before.   A place CAN be loved to death.

As we neared Mahone Bay we saw the three churches.

Another iconic shot in this area.  The skies were clearing as we parked and walked along the street wandering past beautiful colorful buildings.  This was a B&B which also had housing for the birdies attached!

We stopped for a coffee to perk us up a bit at a local coffee roaster.   I got a kick out of this sign on the wall in the restroom.

Another cute building.

Next on to Lunenburg, with it's rich boating history and it's colorful buildings.  It was hilly!  And it was pretty, but also very commercialized.  But we found much to enjoy if we looked the other way from the many businesses catering to the tourists.

This was the fisherman's memorial to those lost at sea.

Loonies are the $1 coin and toonies are the $2 coin.  Here they just ignore pennies all together!  It makes me understand we COULD do that in the U.S. also.

Then we headed down the road a bit further (till we ran out of road!) to an area called Blue Rocks.  It was GORGEOUS!  There were folks sitting in chairs on the side of the road just reading a book and enjoying the view.

And thus we close the day on another wonderful adventure in Nova Scotia!
